Tips when choosing a hotel
You can find hotels in different parts of Manila. My personal suggestion is to book a hotel in Makati City or Taguig City. These cities are safe, walking distance to a variety of shops and restaurants, and generally a pleasant area to stay at. Alabang in Muntinlupa is also a good choice — it’s located in the southern part of Manila and it’s only 1-2 hours away from Tagaytay and Batangas.
Some of the best luxury hotels can be found in Malate and Pasay, with a view of Manila Bay. These hotels offer excellent accommodations and services. But take note that these cities are known for its seedy areas and urban dwellings that can be seen as “eyesore.” So if you want to book a hotel to impress your relatives or friends, it might be better to look elsewhere.
This list of best hotels in Manila consist of luxury hotels, but you can as easily find budget to mid-range hotels anywhere else. There are also strategically placed Airbnbs in the metro.
How to get around Manila
To get around, it’s highly recommended to book via Grab or other transport apps. The taxi culture in the metro is awful — taxi drivers are known for charging a fixed price instead of using a meter and they tend to complain a lot (e.g., the destination is too far, the route is highly trafficked, etc.).
