Essential skin care for summer

Traveling to a tropical destination is always very exciting. That is, until the hot climate starts wreaking havoc on your skin. And if there’s one thing true about the Philippines, it’s that it’s warm and humid — more so during the summer months. Here are five basic skin care essentials to take with you on your next tropical vacation:

Sunblock

We can’t stress how important it is to bring sunblock with on your tropical getaways — and it’s not to avoid tanning. Sunscreen is ultimately designed to protect your skin from ultraviolet rays, sunburns and, surprisingly, premature aging. This includes wrinkles, rough patches, and even skin discoloration.

Just make sure you’re slathering on the right amount! Research on The Healthy has shown that most people put on about half of the volume of sunblock they should be wearing. If you really want the entirety of your skin protected, you should squeeze out an amount about the size of a golf ball.

P.S. Make sure you’re buying eco-friendly sunblock which doesn’t harm corals and underwater life!

Moisturizer

Hot weather can make wrinkles and fine lines more visible. It can even cause your skin to crack! The best way to combat this is by moisturizing twice a day, on the entirety of your vacation. This will help your skin maintain its natural hydration barrier to protect itself from various pollutants, allergens, and bacteria.

Gentle Face Wash

Tropical climates will make you sweat a lot which, in turn, makes your pores more susceptible to bacteria and dirt. Plus, if you’re planning to be in the water a lot, it can really dry up your skin. As such, it’s important to have a gentle facial wash with you.

Pretty Me writer Sheena Dizon recommends the Snail White Whipp Soap, which contains naturally moisturizing ingredients like snail extract. This keeps your skin moist and supple, minus the tacky feeling you get from other facial washes. It’s the perfect way to keep your skin looking fresh throughout your vacation!

Hydrating Serum

Instead of packing a thick cream that can feel heavier on your skin in tropical climates, pack a lightweight serum. Most are reluctant to buy these kinds of things, simply because they think that “lighter” products are less effective. This is not true at all. There are lightweight hydrating products that blend into the skin seamlessly (which actually makes it more effective), all the while reinforcing your skin’s protective barrier.

Face Mist

The longer you stay under the sun, the more you need that extra pick-me-up to combat the heat. The feeling of spraying on mist is similar to that of splashing cool water onto your face — light, cool, and refreshing. Usually, face mists are used to prevent makeup from sliding off your face, but they make good astringents and oil absorbents too.

Just because you’re on vacation, doesn’t give you an excuse to skip out on your routine. In fact, while the waters can soothe your body and mind, it can be equally distressing for your skin. Skin care should never take a backseat.
