It’s only natural for parents to want their children to have balance and harmony in their lives. But with so many interests and pursuits pulling adults and kids alike in so many directions, how do you give equal attention and still keep a sustainable, healthy lifestyle?

Set a Good Example

Children learn by imitation. So it’s important that you are able to balance the various activities in your life as well and demonstrate how you do it to your kids. Do you find yourself constantly overworked and barely spending time with them? Are you always couch binging TV shows instead of doing chores around the house? Kids easily pick up on these traits and it’s easy for them to pick up these traits.

As such, the first thing you need to do is ask yourself if you are able to balance your life well. If there are areas for improvement, work on it step-by-step. Make sure that you spend enough time for work, leisure and recreation, and bonding time with your family or other people close to you, while also giving time to any personal care rituals in your daily schedule. If you find that any of these suddenly begin taking up too much time in your day, you may need to rethink your own priorities.

Remember, you can’t teach your children something that you yourself know nothing about.

Avoid overscheduling

For children below the age of 10, one of the of the most important activities they have is free play. This activity allows them to explore the outermost limits of their imaginations and, in many cases, also engages them in physical activity at the same time. So make sure to allow your children the time and freedom to play.

Avoid putting too many boundaries in place or setting up schedules with full activities other than playing. Doing so may make the children end up feeling even more constrained and unable to enjoy themselves.

Set Healthy Limits

Setting healthy limits is a complementary strategy to the one discussed above.

While kids do need plenty of free time to explore both their inner and outer worlds, they also need to be taught that there are reasonable limits to the time they can spend on activities as well.

Rather than appearing domineering by imposing a unilateral limit to kids’ time on certain activities, you can instead use it as a reward for a behavior you would like to reinforce. Have they kept their room especially clean? Maybe you can reward them with an extra episode of their favorite show. Did they brush their teeth on their own, without any prompting from you? Maybe a few more minutes of screen time on a tablet would encourage them to make that part of their regular routine.

By reinforcing positive behavior with adjustments to the limits that you set for them, you teach your children that some activities are highly encouraged, and more importantly, you show them that you’re supportive of those activities, improving their bond with you as a result. This also allows you to divide their time equally among important activities, not just play time and TV/Internet.

Ultimately, teaching your children the importance of balance is itself a balancing act. Rules and limits must be put in place, but should be moderated and managed to prevent the child from feeling excessively boxed in. While it may sound difficult, teaching them the importance of harmony and a balanced life might be the most important lesson you can teach them.
