If you’re 25 and above, you can probably relate to this: playing in arcades after school or (as in my case) bingeing on retro games like Mario and Bomberman in a PC emulator. It was an integral part of my childhood and I was more than glad to relive it in Derive Cafe in Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa.
Derive Cafe is the “Ultimate Throwback Arcade Cafe in the Philippines”. It’s basically an arcade restaurant with mixed 80s pop culture. Here you can find an arcade section filled with video games, foosball tables, and a claw crane.
What to expect
Derive Cafe has one of the most fun interiors I’ve seen in a while. There are neon-colored signages, walls covered with art featuring pop culture icons, and different table setups (i.e., there are boardgame platforms so you can #SipDinePlay).
As said above, there’s an arcade game room where you can play different games for P5 each. There’s Bomberman, Tetris, Marvel vs Capcom, and so much more.
If you’re here for a special celebration, Derive Cafe also has a KTV/function room which can fit up to 20 people.
For the food, Derive Cafe serves rice meals, burgers, and pastas. For drinks, there are sodas, coffees, or milkshakes. If you’re there to have some fun, the cafe also offers bar food and alcohol.
During our visit, we tried out the bar food paired with bottles of Heineken.
“Stuck in the Cheese” Caldereta Nachos (ala carte – P199/full – P399) is a must-have pulutan. It doesn’t have the usual tomato salsa, but it does have a generous topping of cheese, mayo, and meat.
Catch O’ Fish and Fries (P160) is basically their version of fish and chips. The fish fillet was very tender, and the fries were good.
The Porky Sisig Tacos (1 piece – P75/3 pieces – P220) is a unique twist on your usual tacos. Each piece is very filling.
If you’re having rice, make sure to order the Savory Sizzling Sisig (P300). This is a bit spicier than usual, but it works for me. They also have Donkey Kong Pork Knuckle (P600) which is lechon kawali. The skin was deliciously crispy. These are perfect rice pairings.
I also had Step-up Sausage Bacon Rolls (P349). This is a favorite of mine. The sausages are very tasty and the wrapped bacon added more meaty flavor.
As said above, these are best paired with Heineken beer. They also have other alcoholic choices including Sapporo, Corona, or San Miguel Super Dry/ Light/ Pale Pilsen/ Flavored Beer.
My final thoughts
I didn’t expect to have so much fun on my visit to Derive Cafe. I like the food especially the fact that there’s a variety of food you can order, whether you’re craving for Filipino rice meals, pastry with coffee, or bar chow with cold beers. The ambiance and activities are unique.
Derive Cafe is a little bit out of the way especially for those like us who don’t live in Alabang Hills, but nevertheless it’s a worthwhile themed cafe to visit and I urge you to try it for yourself.
