We all benefit from a massage once or twice a month. I was invited to try the signature service at Balay Hilom Spa in Katipunan Avenue (Quezon City), and you can read about my experience here!
My experience at Balay Hilom Spa
To be honest, at first I was hesitant to go to Balay Hilom Spa because I don’t like traditional Filipino hilot. The previous therapists I’d been to use tough hands and it feels to me that they were only unnecessarily pinching the flesh. Instead, I usually opt for a combination of Swedish and Shiatsu. However, since a lot of my blogger friends had been here in Balay Hilom Spa to good feedback, I thought I’d try it out too.
Balay Hilom Spa is located in FBR Arcade building in Katipunan Ave, which is one of the old buildings in the area. Inside the spa, it’s dim and it’s designed similar to a bahay kubo, with wooden seats and furnishings. The space is cozy, similar to other regular spas.
What sets Balay Hilom Spa apart from others is that it offers services that originated from different parts of the Philippines. For the massage, there’s the signature Hilot Balay Hilom and Kisig Amuma from the Visayas. They also offer Hilot Suob, a form of steam therapy from the Cagayan Valley, and Dagdagay, a form of foot acupressure from the Cordilleras.
Upon our arrival, we were served warm ginger tea. The tea was good, and it’s not too strong so it’s easy to gulp down. A staff then brought pails of warm water as foot soak. Afterwards, we were lead to our respective rooms (separated by curtains) for a 70-minute massage.
The massage was better than expected. It was different from my previous experiences. The therapist who was assigned to me knows how to apply the right pressure. It was relaxing that I almost fell asleep.
I’d have loved to have tried the other services in Balay Hilom Spa so I could give more feedback and photos, but regretfully their booking schedule was full. That saying, it was a nice experience overall.
If there’s something that I would like to improve, it’s the location. They are located in an old building that isn’t exactly enticing, and we wouldn’t have gone there if we didn’t have a specific business inside. They may miss out on foot traffic from other customers who think similarly. Also, it would probably better if it was a bit brighter inside.
Overall though, given its service and unique offerings, Balay Hilom Spa is certainly a good spa to visit especially for those living in Katipunan area.
